An air pillow is made of lightweight vinyl material and uses 50-year-old technology to try to help winterize a swimming pool. It fails at this objective year after year after year.
Here’s why:
A winter cover has minimal overlap material (for example: a 24′ pool uses a 27′ diameter cover).
For a winter cover to work properly it must lay flat “stress-free” on top of the pool water surface, then go up the inner pool wall, across the pool top ledges, and then down the outer pool wall before being securely fastened with a cable or water tubes.
The pool water should handle the weight and pressure of the rain and snow, “not the cover”.
When using an air-filled pillow there just isn’t enough material for that to happen … it’s simple math.
Once filled with air, the pillow forces the cover up and away from the waterline that it should be resting on and creates a tent effect.
An air pillow also has installation ropes that get tightly fastened to, and pull in on, a pool’s top ledges. These ropes remain up in the air off the waterline creating air pockets where wind creeps in and eventually tear the cover or rip out its grommets.
Therefore, an air pillow actually places a winter cover in a very vulnerable position where it creates stress and pressure on a pool cover, its grommets, and the pool top ledges.
It forces the winter cover to fight off nature’s harsh elements of high winds, snow loads and constant pounding heavy rainfall … it’s a battle it can never win.
